The word "family" refers to two or more people who are related in any way biologically, emotionally, or legally. Family systems theory is a school of thought in counseling that believes that no member of a family lives in a vacuum. One's patterns of thoughts and behavior, values and beliefs are all influenced by and are under the influence of other family members. Successful therapy then involves working with several family members rather than identifying one member's behavior as problematic. Family therapy is often combined with individual counseling. When working with children some level of family therapy is critical.
